Tips for the Eco-friendly

We all want to do our little bit to contribute to the improvement of our environment through the way we act, purchase and manage our waste.

Below are a few ideas to help you and your family live a more eco-friendly life.

Every month a new tip will be added. Enjoy!

Tip 1. Wildlife habitat in your own backyard

You can create habitat for wildlife in your own backyard. You will need to consider the requirements for animals when planning or developing the gardens around your property. Consider having water features - these only need to be shallow and low to the ground. Birds, insects and lizards will be appreciate having this source of fresh water. Provide a diverse range of plants - tall trees, shrubs, grasses, groundcovers and vines. Many small birds love prickly plants to seek refuge and build nests. The vegetation you choose will provide shelter, nest sites and food for animals. Rocks on the ground also enhance the habitat for lizards, snakes and frogs.

The most important thing to consider is choosing native plants that will grow better, require less water and are more suited to your local environment and weather. Native plants often support up to ten times more species of native wildlife than non-native plants.

 Happy gardening!

Tip 2. Protect birds from window collisions

Many birds collide with our windows as they see escape routes and possible safety zones mirrored in the reflective glass around our homes.

The speed and force of the impact can cause instant death. At the very least, many birds are stunned. This temporarily makes them less responsive and highly susceptible to predation.

Two great ways to help protect birds in your neighbourhood is to either pull the curtains in rooms with highly reflective glass or apply a decal to deter the bird from flying towards the window.
